SWDA HOMEWORK CLUB

SWDA Homework Club (SWDAHC) is the first Homework Club program designed specifically for students who live in the areas of North Melbourne, Kensington, Carlton, Flemington, Ascot Vale, Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Footscray, and surrounding areas established in January 2007 at Community Hub, Ground floor 12 Holland Court, Flemington 3031.

SWDA Homework Club delivers regular online tutoring via zoom sessions on Monday to Sunday and in person tutoring on Wednesday and Thursday per week. Time: 5pm to 7pm School terms and school holidays.

At SWDA our purpose is to promote, develop and encourage the wellbeing of young people in the area. We do that by providing, facilitating, planning, and advocating for the needs and issues of young people, their families, and the community.

SWDA Homework Club is a culturally safe entry point for our emerging culturally and linguistically diverse communities and all young people in the local area. SWDA Homework Club provides young people access to a supportive educational environment, resources and tutoring to continue their educational journey.

SWDA Homework Club is bound by our Child Safe Standards Policy and other legislative requirements, including our Reportable Conduct Policy and Victoria’s Child Safe Standards. SWDA follow Victorian Government policy and procedures and guidelines service agreement, policy and procedures and guidelines around crisis support and intervention.

Time required

2 hours per week required every Wednesday  or Thursday of school terms and school holidays 5pm – 7pm  at SWDA Office 15 Stubbs St, Kensington VIC 3031.

Requirements

  • Volunteers and students complete a fit to work process, including mandatory police and working with children check
  • Ability to work within SWDA Child Safe Standards Policy, and other legislative requirements, including our Reportable Conduct Policy and Victoria’s Child Safe Standards
  • Interest and desire to assist young people with their education
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to work in a culturally appropriate way with both young people and parents
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young people

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Support the learning needs of students (Grade 1-Grade 6 and Year 7 – Year 12).
  • Assist with weekly homework tasks or assignments
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with young people in the program
  • Work cooperatively with the other tutors and staff on the program
  • Participate in any administrative or evaluation tasks

Placements for tertiary students

If you are a tertiary student undertaking an approved Social Work, Youth Work, Education or Community Development course, consider a student placement with our Youth Services team.

Participants learn what local community organisation offers young people in Somali Women Development Association Inc.

Note: work experience for secondary students is available.

Placements are available for 8 hours per day. Hours of placement will generally be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday at Office 4, 12 Holland Court, Flemington, and Office 15 Stubbs St. Kensington at Somali Women Development Association Inc. The SWDA Homework Club will generally be 5pm – 7pm, Wednesday and Thursday per week.

Block placements (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) are negotiable for research projects or office-based placements only.

Priority will be given to students studying approved University courses as mentioned above.

Note: you’ll need to submit the form at least 1 month prior to your placement to ensure adequate time for the processing of your request.

We receive a lot of applications and cannot offer places to all students.
